By his slimmer stature and lithe grace, Mathias seems to have the appearance of a swordsman or archer. And while all Royal Knights are required to know the basics of the sword, and he can at least avoid shooting himself in the foot with a bow, his specialty is actually the ax. His own weapon isn't an overly massive example of its kind, with a longer handle and slighter head than is typical, but it suits his fighting style nicely. Since he almost always fights from his Pokemon's back, he needs the longer reach, and the hindrance to his speed is lessened by his partner's graceful flying.xx Magic

xx Face Claim
Gerome - Fire Emblem: Awakeningxx Appearance
Perhaps it's the self-assured way he carries himself, or the cold expression formed by his noble features, or maybe it's just the mask, but there's something about him that just exudes dignity. The intimidating aura comes from a certain fierceness rather than an appearance of brute power, as he's slim, albeit tall with a wiry sort of strength. The long years of training that it took to become a knight sculpted his body, yes, but also the way he carries it- straight and tall and proud, with the predatory grace one would expect of one of the best fighters in the kingdom. It's part of his position and part of who he is- he could no more change his stance as he could his entire personality. It's the persona of a professional fighter, and he spent years painstakingly crafting it. It can be intimidating to some, but he isn't looking for friends, and it makes him seem older than he really is, which is nice for a young star trying to make a name for himself. But it isn't just how he presents himself- he seems born for this role. With sharp, bird-like features and vigilant ruby eyes, he makes quite the striking figure. Fair skin is set off by his dark hair, longer than it probably should be and therefore slicked back out of his face. He's the type to turn heads, walking around with full armor and a giant ax, but by far the most noticeable feature is his mask. Strong as steel and black as obsidian, is slashes across the paleness of his face, obscuring most of his features as well as his natural eye color. It isn't for any sort of anonymity- he's more conspicuous with it on than he would be without it- but rather, it serves as a way for him to hide from others. It's a reminder that he's on duty, that his personal feelings don't matter, a tool to keep him impartial to the plights of the world- but it also serves as a safety blanket and something to hide behind. Without it, not only is he awkward and shy, but his thoughts are clearly written across his face.

xx Personality
The man in the mask is a professional to the core, the very definition of what a Royal Knight ought to be. Aloof, distant, even cold- he is loyal to the Kingdom and to their King, and to nothing else: not morals, not pity, not even self-preservation. It's eerie, apathetic, the constant blank expression on his face. He rarely speaks if not absolutely necessary, and even then it's a low monotone, lacking any sort of human inflection. He has the ability to completely separate himself from his duty, with a fierce, almost obsessive sense of loyalty. It probably isn't healthy, and is certainly terrifying to his enemies, but that's the way he is. He's built up quite a reputation, the King's guard dog, if you will, and even those in Olivae fear him. The Iron Knight- cold and unyielding, a weapon in its purest form. But very few know the man behind the mask, the one with the soft heart, the one who cries and blushes and feels, however silently. He's actually a kind, incredibly shy creature, though he loves his kingdom with all his soul. His iron facade is a way to deal with the guilt that comes with violence: he knows it is necessary, so he must lock away his personal feelings in order to get the job done. Someone has to do the dirty work, and he's all but sacrificed himself to the good of the kingdom. So what if the guilt keeps him up at night with horrid nightmares? The enemies of the kingdom will see that weakness and feed upon it, take it as a sign that Olivae has grown complacent. He cannot allow that to happen, no matter how his conscience cries against it.
The Secret Side of Me
xx Greatest Secret
He doesn't believe in magic. He's fiercely, savagely loyal to Olivae, harboring a deep-seated distrust of the Crystal Kingdom, but... well, he can't help but think that they might have a point. He has a deep bond with his Pokemon, yes, but that doesn't mean that spells and gods and all these myths are really true.xx Greatest Fear
A takeover by Crystal. He might secretly admire their lack of superstition, but Olivae is his kingdom, and the thought that he might fail and cause her downfall is absolutely terrifying.xx Greatest Desire
To make Olivae strong again. He doesn't remember it, but the old knights tell of a time when Olivae supported herself, independent of the Crystal Kingdom which now all but rules them. He dreams of a day when Olivae stands as an equal among the three- though it might not be in his lifetime.Out of This World
xx Pokemon
A female Charizard, by the name of Pandora. She's a rather fierce beast, strongly opinionated, and quite capable of bossing him around. Though the Pokemon is a bit of a bully toward her master, they know it's all in jest, and the two are nearly inseparable. He fights much, much better from his favorite perch on her back, and though the honor of the Olivaen Knights is slowly slipping away, a masked figure atop a flaming dragon is nothing to laugh at. xx History
Mathias's father was Abel, a member of the Royal Guard and one of the Five Royal Knights of Olivae. Abel's father was Adam, a member of the Royal Guard and one of the Five Royal Knights of Olivae. And his father before him, and his father before him, as far back as any of them can remember. He has no memories of his mother- dead during childbirth- and he was their first child, thus leaving him the sole heir to a long and powerful bloodline. As such, he was raised to be a Royal Knight, from the moment his mother exchanged his life for hers. Abel was a busy man, being the First of the knights of his time, and so the young Mathias was left in the care of the Royal Guard as a whole. He was raised by the elderly knights, reared on the stories of old, of a time where Olivae prospered and all other kingdoms cowered in the face of her mighty army.It gave him dreams, ambitions- an ideal to believe in, to stand up for. It was his purpose, his reason for existence. And with such a resolve behind him, there was nothing he couldn't do. By the age of five, he was swinging his own practice sword. By eight he was shooting arrows. By ten, he was sparring with his own metal blade, holding his own though of course no one ever went all out. At the age of fourteen he stood before the Temple of Ho-oh and received his own Pokemon, a majestic, fearsome beast he dubbed Pandora. The two of them had an instant connection, and though they couldn't speak like some of the old stories said, there was definitely a special something there. Thus marked his entrance into manhood and the beginning of his official training- though he quickly and easily surpassed the others.
He flew through his knight training, passing every test they threw at him with flying colors- well, everything except for the actual weapons. He was decent with a sword, don't get me wrong, but from the back of his Pokemon it just didn't have the reach he needed. Which led one of the elders to recommend a new weapon, one he'd totally passed by before, thinking it was too heavy, too slow, too awkward. The ax. But now, with the assistance of his Pokemon, he found more use in it than he ever could have expected. He became the type of fighter no one ever expected- one capable of delivering crippling blows, unexpected from such a skinny child. He was serving the Royal Guard by sixteen, but within a few months, disaster struck.
It was supposed to be a routine mission- patrolling the Olivaen desert province, keeping an eye out for slavers. But something went terribly wrong, and his father, the first of the Five Knights of Olivae, was killed in action. The official story was that a group of illegal slavers ambushed him, but Mathias never bought it- there was simply no way that the best knight Olivae had to offer was beaten by mere rogues. It was obviously a conspiracy, meant to weaken their kingdom that Crystal might make their takeover even more quickly. He was furious, ready to ride into battle solo in revenge- but was held back by his duty. For with the death of one of the Five came an opening, and he himself was inducted to take his father's place. Even then, he attempted to leave his post, senseless in his grief and ready for revenge.
He came upon a patrol, and though he might have taken care of them had he been prepared, he was still just a boy and sick with grief. The other Knights came to his rescue, but in his stupidity, he got two more of them killed. The grief and the guilt nearly killed him, and on the day that he was elevated through the ranks to the Third, he swore an oath to the king: never again. Never again would he allow his own emotions to get in the way of his duty. This was the day he first took up wearing a mask, and he hasn't been seen in public without it since. The experience hardened him, or at least his outer shell, turning who otherwise might have been a kind young man into the hardened veteran the Kingdom sees today.
